Went for some Mother’s Day lunch at Emma’s favourite – Pizza Express. Again, I opted for the chicken Caesar salad whilst Emma’s asbestos mouth coped with the very spicy ‘Etna’ pizza.
For the first time, we ordered Aimee some food off the kids menu – instead of her having tidbits of ours, or some garlic bread (she loves garlic bread!). The kids menu in Pizza Express is a set three-course affair where you choose a main and have doughballs for a starter, and a strawberry sundae for pud. Cautiously, we chose a plain cheese and tomato ‘Margerita’ pizza for Aimee.
The doughballs, which were surprisingly chewy and hard, were dispatched of very quickly. The pizza, however, was much more fun! We cut it up into manegable slices for her, and she proceeded to suck all the tomato sauce, and most of the cheese from the top. After a few mini slices, her hands were covered in sauce. Then she did her pièce de résistance, and raised her hands in the air and put both of her mucky paws on her face, a millisecond later, she’d completely covered her face in pizza topping. Completely. “Ta-da!”, she chirps!
Neither of us could help it, nor indeed could the couple at the table next to us, and we all burst out laughing. Proper laughing, out loud, in a public restaurant. Oops. I know we’re not supposed to ‘encourage’ her by laughing at her when she’s naughty, but, it was impossible not to!
Did a wander along Division Street and down Fargate and did some window shopping. I was half interested in getting that Guitar Hero game for either the Wii or Xbox 360, after playing it a few weeks ago at Emma’s sister’s place. Seeing its price-tag soon changed that idea – I can’t believe that the plastic mini guitar-shaped controller can possibly warrant a £75 price tag. You can get real electric guitars for less money than that!
Mother’s Day is an odd celebration. I’d chalk it up to being a greetings card maker’s wet dream (like Velentine’s Day), but it’s not the case. Mother’s Day is all over the place, date-wise. At least with Valentine’s, it’s the 14th of February every year, without fail – but Mother’s Day is the fourth Sunday of Lent in the UK. However, we’re fairly alone in that view.
In the US and Germany, it’s not til the second Sunday of May. Whereas the French have it on the last Sunday in May, and the Spanish, well they have it on the first Sunday in May. I can’t wait until the European Commission try and ratify some kind of standard on that one!
The Argentinians, they like it later in the year – the third Sunday in October, whereas the Norwegians have it early – the second Sunday in February. In fact, the only other countries that share the UK’s dating of Mother’s Day are the Republic of Ireland and, erm, Nigeria. A warm Mothering Sunday to all you mothers of young 419ers out there!
