Buying a domain name just got that little bit trickier. Want to check for the availability of that killer domain name that you’re thinking of for your next web2.0 mash-up? Whatever you do – don’t be using Network Solutions’ search tools.
It was revealed yesterday that domain name registrar, Network Solutions Inc, are actually automatically registering every domain name which is searched for using their web-based WHOIS tools. This makes the domain unavailable for purchase by any other registrar and means that if you want to register that name – you must buy it with Network Solutions.
This is a practice known as ‘Domain Tasting’, which allows a newly registered domain name to be returned to the ‘pool’ of available domains after a 5-day ‘grace period’. As Network Solutions are a registrar this doesn’t actually cost them anything at all.
This is all well and good (well, actually, it’s not!) but this makes that ‘pre-registered’ domain unavailable for purchase from any other domain registrar. Madness.
Anyhoo.
Today the Sky+ remote control disappeared. This caused chaos and panic in the Sheridan household. No Sky+ remote = No Sky+ functionality = one tetchy Emma. :/ The remote control was located after an extensive search of the house, and was found hidden in carrier bags in the kitchen.
The primary suspect in this abduction case is a 2 foot tall female, around 14 months old with fair hair and blue eyes, answering to the name of ‘Aimee’, whilst utilizing AKA’s such as ‘Monster’, ‘Monkey’ and ‘Oi, Stop That’. If you see this person, do not approach, as they are very dangerous. Dangerous to your televisual enjoyment, at least.
Received a funny letter today from the solicitors who did the conveyance on our house purchase (some months ago now);
"On checking our ledgers we find we hold £1.00 to your credit and have pleasure enclosing herewith stamps to that value. Please do not trouble to acknowledge receipt."
Sure enough, paperclipped to the letter is a £1 postage stamp! Honest lawyers – whatever next!
